“We Are Like A Family” NCWorks Career Center in Statesville Helps Career Seeker Find Employment

Apr 27, 2023

Larry Morrison entered the NCWorks Career Center-Statesville on March 27, 2023, asking questions about how to find a job. He explained to the team that he had just lost his job and did not know how to begin looking for a new position. The NCWorks Career Center-Statesville, led by Center Leader Annisa Morton, was the perfect place for Mr. Morrison to begin his employment search. Mike Willis, NCWorks Career Advisor, and Judi Shepherd, NCWorks Title V Front Desk Receptionist guided Larry on how to create an NCWorks profile and informed him of the resources made available to him just by coming into the NCWorks Career Center.

Mr. Willis coached Larry through preparing a resume that would get him noticed by hiring managers and how to use the job search tools in NCWorks. Mr. Willis provided a sense of comfort and reassurance to Larry, allowing him to feel confident in his skills and how much they are needed in the community. Through providing actual data for the Statesville area for his preferred career choice, Larry felt secure that he was taking the right steps to get a position quickly.

During the following days, Larry came to NCWorks Career Center almost daily to conduct a work search and apply for open positions. The NCWorks team, especially Ms. Shepherd, gave him encouragement and support.
Larry told the team that he enjoyed coming to NCWorks everyday to do his job search because, "we are like a family".

Larry's dedicated daily work search, professional guidance from Mr. Willis, Ms. Shepherd's continuous encouragement, and repeated assurances that the process works; paid off on April 6, 2023. Ten days following his job loss, Larry proudly came to NCWorks Career Center-Statesville and informed the team that he had recieved an job offer for an over-the-road driver position to start immediately, which he accepted. He was hired by Red Classic Transportation, making 60 cents per mile plus shift premium for evening trips. Larry noted that he will be at home every night in his new job, which is a big deal for him and his family.
