NCWorks Centralina Career Center-Statesville Celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month

Nov 04, 2019

As proclaimed by North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper, Hispanic Heritage Month in North Carolina which was celebrated from September 15 – October 15, 2019, recognizes and celebrates the contributions and culture of Hispanic and Latino Americans to our nation and society.

In honor of the month, Francisca Rios, Agriculture & Foreign Labor Program Manager for the NC Department of Commerce - Division of Workforce Solutions, was invited by the NCWorks Career Center-Statesville to present training to the staff about the culture and history of Hispanic people in our State.

"I thought it was a great initiative from Mary Haigwood, Assistant Center Leader for the NCWorks Career Center in Statesville, to take some time and add to their schedule this event for her staff," Francisca said.

The event’s agenda focused on building better relationships with Spanish-speaking customers and cultural awareness, general demographics and statistics of Hispanic population in North Carolina.

With the assistance of Division of Workforce Solutions staff member Myra Hernandez, Mary shared a few common phrases in Spanish and resources for staff to utilize with the Hispanic population.

“Every team member stated that the training was interesting and worthwhile,” added Mary.
