NCWorks Career Center-Rowan Customer Accepts Life Changing Job

Sep 03, 2019

When Vonda Hoover visited the NCWorks Career Center-Rowan in May 2019, it started off very similarly to most customers who visit the center. That feeling consisted of excitement towards the unknown chance for an opportunity. As Vonda browsed the NCWorks website and search through all types of prospects, chances for opportunities began to appear and her desires to apply.

Since 2005, Vonda has worked in the group home and assistant living environments. She is a single mother whose goal was to find employment to ensure her ability to sustain her livelihood. With her wealth of knowledge within the group home setting, she was looking for a chance to continue with her nurturing abilities of developing individuals into their best selves. She searched  the NCWorks site and with the assistance of NCWorks Career Center welcome desk representative Daisy Boyd, they were able to find a career opportunity that had excellent potential.

There were some hiccups in the job search process. Vonda expressed her dismay at the slow operation of the fax machine along with the computers. But Daisy would not let Vonda fail to get her information faxed, so they worked through any delays. Even though Daisy remain diligent in her assistance, a slight frustration stilled lingered under the surface for Vonda. So, she reported these frustrations through the Zingle text survey to the Career Center Leader.

On May 8, 2019, Shelia Heggins, NCWorks Career Center-Rowan Assistant Leader, contacted Vonda to discuss her frustration with the devices that she utilized at the center. The discussion was a simple one;  Vonda believed that both pieces of equipment needed to be updated. Shelia explained that the computers would be updated soon, and the fax machine has since been replaced with a newer one.

During her visits to the Career Center, she identified a position with Milling Manor as the House Manager of the facility. On May 9, 2019, she started work with the group home.

Despite difficulties, Vonda  was able to find employment in a position that maintained her family’s lifestyle. And her feedback regarding the NCWorks Career Center allowed staff to move on her recommendations for changes to achieve better customer service.  And, even though her feedback on the text survey make have been considered negative, her name would later be drawn from a hat and selected as the winner of a $25.00 gift card from ResCare Workforce Services (Centralina WDB One-Stop Operator) for her participation in the Zingle text survey for customer service.

“Without the help of Daisy Boyd and her patience with making sure that the information was sent out correctly, I don’t think that I would have gotten the job,” said Vonda.  She added that without the help of the NCWorks Career Center-Rowan staff, there would possibly be very limited places to look for employment.

“These interactions have strengthened our relationships with the community because of our persistent commitment towards helping others find a way to identify and locate new career opportunities,” added Joseph Dismuke, Center Leader at the NCWorks Career Center-Rowan.
