Carolina Stalite will spend $1.3 million to reopen its Stanly County lightweight aggregate plant and bring 14 jobs there.

Stanly County Commissioners approved $6,500 in incentives to be paid over five years.

Rick Williams,chairman of the Stanly County Economic Development Commission,says Carolina Stalite is a "quality driven company" that makes contributions to the communities they serve.

Based in Salisbury,Carolina Stalite has one existing plant in Gold Hill,which employs about 100. The plant in Stanly County is located in the Aquadale community but carries a Norwood address.

The lightweight aggregate is used in building and bridge construction along with other construction applications. It"s produced by crushing rock in a kiln and is added to concrete to produce a a lighter construction material.

Other details of reopening the plant,which was closed five years ago,weren"t disclosed.
