NCWorks -Stanly

The NCWorks Career Center-Stanly, led by Gus Vanegas, was proud to take part in the International Overdose Awareness Day event on August 31, 2023. The event was held at the Stanly County Commons and was attended by over 100 people. The NCWorks Career Center staff provided information about the services and resources available to individuals, employers, and partners by the Center. The information was well received by the audience and they left with valuable information about the NCWorks Career Center and how to access services.

Some of the speakers who shared their success stories were actual customers who were changed by the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA), On-The-Job Training (OJT), and Work Experience (WEX) services funded by the Centralina Workforce Development Board (WDB), and offered at the NCWorks Career Center-Stanly.
Here are some of the highlights of the customers' success presentations and how the NCWorks Career Center team including Frances Thornton, Business Services Representative, and Cathy Thompson, Talent Development Consultant, helped these individuals:
• Josh and Melissa were living in the streets when Stanly County Open Hands offered some help to them. Both were placed to work at Open Hands in Work Experience opportunities while receiving detox services. After completing their work experience assignments, they were hired by Rayfield Meat Market in Anson County through WIOA-funded OJT services, and they continue their employment there. Josh and Melissa now have a job, a place to stay, and transportation. Melissa will give birth to their new baby girl in 6 more weeks.

• After being involved in an accident and family trauma in her life, JiLinda became an active drug prescription user for many years. Clean for a few years now, JiLinda was able to rebuild her work record through a Work Experience opportunity at Assurance Life Learning Center. JiLinda loves her job because she is able to help other people currently going through the same situation. Terry Howard, the CEO of the company, loves JiLinda's energy, passion, and determination to help her clients. The plan is for JiLinda to transition from work experience to OJT and permanent employment with the company.

The NCWorks Career Center-Stanly team is committed to helping people who are struggling with diverse situations including drug use. They believe that everyone deserves a second chance and are committed to providing the resources and support that people need to get back on their feet. The success of the NCWorks Career Center Stanly's participation in the International Overdose Awareness Day event is a testament to the importance of collaboration and community. By working together, we can make a difference.

The Centralina Workforce Development Board is proud of the efforts of the NCWorks Career Center-Stanly team to improve lives and increase partnerships in the Centralina WDB region.
