Savannah Loftis, a 20-year-old with remarkable resilience, defied the odds and overcame significant obstacles during the pandemic. Struggling with internal issues within her family during COVID-19, she faced the daunting task of finding a new living environment to support herself. Despite her shyness and anxiety, she was determined to seek increased confidence and direction.

A turning point came when Ms. Loftis entered the NCWorks Career Center Rowan, led by Joseph Dismuke, and was connected with Josh Barbee, a dedicated Career Development Specialist at the center. Barbee played a vital role in guiding Ms. Loftis into Centralina WDB-funded NextGen services, an initiative known for building confidence and providing direction to young individuals like Savannah.

Having graduated from high school with no prior work experience, Ms. Loftis embraced the opportunity to enter into a Work Experience contract with the Town of East Spencer. Ms. Frances Thornton, NCWorks Centralina Business Services Representative, worked to develop this opportunity with Michael Douglas, Town Manager for East Spencer. The work experience position was Customer Service Representative at the town splash pad which required her to interact with the public and her co-workers, a challenge she willingly accepted to foster personal growth and maturity.

Savannah Loftis' dedication and enthusiasm garnered high praise from her team members and supervisors, leading to a significant boost in her confidence and sense of support.
As the end of summer approaches, Ms. Loftis' contract with the Town of East Spencer is coming to a close. However, her journey does not end there. Thanks to the invaluable work experience she gained, Centralina NextGen services was able to immediately place Savannah on an On-The-Job Training (OJT) contract with another reputable company in Rowan County, Makenzie Taxidermy Supply, located on Saint Luke Church Road in Salisbury. The upcoming OJT opportunity at Makenzie Taxidermy promises to be another stepping stone in Savannah's personal and professional growth. With her determination, dedication, and the support of NextGen, she is poised to make a lasting impact in her new role.

The Centralina Workforce Development Board is proud of the efforts of the NextGen Centralina Team. The NextGen services are designed to empower young individuals, and Savannah's success story exemplifies the program's effectiveness. Savannah Loftis's remarkable journey showcases the transformative power of NextGen in assisting young people to find their footing and thrive in the face of adversity. Her story serves as an inspiration to many, highlighting the importance of community support and mentorship in nurturing the potential of today's youth.
