NCWorks Career Center-Lincoln Customer Bounces Back After Layoff

NCWorks Career Center customer Tamell Bradham began his re-employment journey in July 2019 after being laid off from the 
Walking Company in Lincolnton. He came into the NCWorks Career Center-Lincoln unemployed and expressing a desire to obtain a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL).
After working with NCWorks Career Center-Lincoln staff to create a resume, participating in career counseling, and researching labor market information, Tamell soon started his training at TransTech Truck Driving School in Newton with scholarship funding provided by Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA) funding provided by the Centralina WDB.
Excited about the possibility of reaching his goals, Tamell worked with NCWorks Career Center staff to an action plan and objectives. Determined to succeed, he kept his appointments with staff and even bought in his 5-month-old daughter whom he was caretaker of while the child's mother was at work. Even once classes started, he did have some childcare issues but were quickly resolved thanks to his family .
Tamell completed his training in December and now has his CDL, he applied for several jobs but kept holding out for the kind of job that was local and paid well.
According to Tamell, waiting was the right thing to do. He found a local job at Sysco in Charlotte delivering fast food to local restaurants in the area. He stated the pay and benefits allow him to better care for his family now and in the future.
“Tamell had a plan. One part of his plan was to make sure he would continually provide for his daughter. The next part of his plan was to devise a way to do so now and in the future. He knew that obtaining his CDL was the way to bring his plan to fruition, and he did it! Tamell was determined and stayed the course despite any obstacle,” said Sheila Jennings, Talent Development Consultant at the NCWorks Career Center in Lincoln County.
