N.C. Governor Cooper Announces $400,000 for Centralina Workforce Development Board for Re-Build Your Future Initiative

Feb 27, 2019

North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper formally announced the six recipients of NCWorks Local Innovation Fund grants on Feb. 26 at Rowan-Cabarrus Community College’s NC Research Campus facility in Kannapolis. The Centralina Workforce Development Board (WDB) received a grant of $400,000 for the Re-Build Your Future Initiative.

The project is led by Rowan-Cabarrus Community College and the NCWorks Career Center in Cabarrus County, in partnership with NC Department of Commerce Re-Entry Initiative, local employers, and the Cabarrus County Sheriff’s Office. RE-Build Your Future will provide post-secondary training to formerly incarcerated individuals in the light construction industry and help them obtain their CDL-B license. The project will train community college and frontline workforce staff to deal with issues faced by the re-entry population and connect job seekers and potential students to construction employers in the area.

The NCWorks Local Innovation Fund supports projects that do one or more of the following: address an underserved community or population currently disconnected from the education and workforce system; bring together diverse community organizations; help workers increase their education and skills; and develop talent pipelines for in-demand, high-wage occupations.

The Centralina WDB is pleased to partner with Rowan-Cabarrus Community College, NCWorks Career Center-Cabarrus, local employers, and other partners to further develop another pool of potential employees for local employers to hire.  “This is one more example of how local workforce development boards are the catalyst for ensuring solutions are developed and implemented through great local partnerships”, said David Hollars, Centralina WDB Executive Director.
